Shedding Misplaced Priorities

July 6, 2025

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before usNew Living Translation

Hebrews 12:2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. New Living Translation

Acts 20:24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. New International Version

2 Timothy 4:6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. New International Version

A Good Thing Becomes a Bad Thing When it Becomes the First Thing

Relationships, Recreation, Hobbies, Exercise, Entertainment, Media, Careers, Acquiring Things, etc.

Matthew 6:31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. New King James Version

The Greatest Commandment + The Great Commission = God’s Kingdom or Agenda

The Greatest Commandment is Loving God with All Our Heart, Soul, Mind, Strength, and People

Mark 12:28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” New International Version

Mark 12:29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” New International Version

Galatians 5:13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” New International Version

The Great Commission is Sharing Jesus with People and Helping Them Become Disciples

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. New King James Version

(Jesus is just about to ascend into heaven! Notice the next two verses.)

Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. New King James Version

How to Talk about Jesus (Without being that Guy)

We Fulfill Our Specific Race When We Use Our Gifting’s to Serve Believers

1 Peter 4:10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another11 Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen. New Living Translation

There are THREE Possible Responses to Today’s Message:

Who Me? Exodus 3:11

Not Me! Jonah 1:3

Send Me! Isaiah 6:8

Today Let’s all ask ourselves:

What distractions, if any, have I allowed to interfere with running my race?
