Why do Christians believe Christianity is the only true way to heaven? How should Christians treat people of other faiths?
Today we’ll compare Christianity (2.3 billion), to Islam (2 billion), Hinduism (1.2 billion), Mormonism (17 million), and Jehovah’s Witnesses (9 million).
Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” New International Version
Matthew 16:17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. New International Version
Acts 16:14 One of them was Lydia from Thyatira, a merchant of expensive purple cloth, who worshiped God (She believed in the God of the law of Moses but didn’t convert to Judaism). As she listened to us, the Lord opened her heart, and she accepted what Paul was saying. New Living Translation
2 Corinthians 4:3 And even if our gospel is veiled (hidden, unable to be seen), it is veiled to those who are perishing. New International Version
2 Corinthians 4:4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image ofGod. New International Version
Galatians 1:8 Let God’s curse (Greek: Anathema, this word means to stand under God’s judgment and be devoted to destruction because the true Gospel has been distorted.) fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven, who preaches a different kind of Good News than the one we preached to you. New Living Translation
Christian Doctrine of the Bible: The Bible is the inspired and authoritative Word of God. Written by human authors under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Bible is God’s revealed truth to humanity and His final authority for faith, salvation, and Christian living. Because God’s Word is divinely inspired, it is not to be altered, added to, or replaced by later revelation or human teaching. (Ps. 119:160, Isa. 40:8, Deut. 4:2, Matt. 24:35, 2 Tim. 3:16, 2 Pet. 1:20–21, Gal. 1:8–9, Rev. 22:18–19)
Islam believes the Christian Bible has been corrupted and altered by Jews and Christians and the Quran is the final and perfect revelation to mankind. Hinduism doesn’t believe the Christian Bible is from God. They have three sacred texts of their own.
Mormons believe the Christian Bible was inspired but that it’s not enough and the book of Mormon, and other Mormon writings reveal the full truth. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe the Christian Bible is God’s Word, but it has to be their New World Translation that changes key Scriptures about Jesus and salvation, and it can only be interpreted through the Watchtower organization.
Christian Doctrine of the Person and Work of Jesus Christ: Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man, the eternal Son of God, uncreated and the Creator of all things. He took on human flesh through the virgin birth, lived a sinless life, and revealed God perfectly. He died on the cross as a substitute for humanity’s sins, rose bodily from the grave, and is the only way of salvation, saving all who place their faith in Him.” (John 1:1-14, 1 Tim. 2:5, John 8:58, Rev. 1:8, Col. 1:16, John 1:3, Matt. 1:23, Luke1:35, Heb. 4:15, 1 Pet. 2:22, John 14:9, Heb. 1:3, Isa. 53:5, 1 Pet.2:24, 1 Cor. 15:3–4, Luke 24:39, John 14:6, Acts 4:12, John 3:16, Rom. 10:9)
Islam denies that Jesus is divine. It believes Jesus was a prophet, not the Son of God, and that He did not die on the cross or rise again. It rejects His work of atonement for sin and teaches that salvation is through submission to Allah and obedience.
Hinduism views Jesus as a wise teacher, guru, or one of many divine manifestations, but not the unique Son of God. They do not believe Jesus died as the only sacrifice for sin or rose again for salvation. Instead, salvation is understood through karma, devotion, or spiritual enlightenment.
Mormons believe that Jesus is the Son of God but not eternally. They teach that He is a created spirit being and the literal offspring of God the Father. While they affirm His death and resurrection, they believe salvation involves faith plus works, ordinances, and obedience within their church system.
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe there is one God, Jehovah, and reject the Trinity. They teach that Jesus is Michael the archangel, a created being and not God. They believe He died to provide a ransom, but deny His full deity and bodily resurrection, and teach that salvation depends on faith combined with works and loyalty to their organization.
How should we treat people of other faiths?
Matthew 13:24 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way.” New King James Version
Matthew 13:26 “But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. 27 So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’” New King James Version
Matthew 13:28 “He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them.’” New King James Version
Matthew 13:30 “Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.” New King James Version
Matthew 13:36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house. And His disciples came to Him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field.” New King James Version
Matthew 13:37 He answered and said to them: “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one.” New King James Version
Matthew 13:39 The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. 40 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. New King James Version
Matthew 13:41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. New King James Version
Matthew 13:43 Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear! New King James Version
