Should Christians Use AI? — Ryan Cathers

What do we make of AI?

Narrow AI, General AI, Super AI

Should Christians use AI?...

How should Christians use AI?

Genesis 2:9 And Yahweh God caused to grow from the ground every tree that was pleasing to the sight and good for food. And the tree of life was in the midst of the garden, along with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Lexham English Bible

Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the [tree of the knowledge of good and evil] was good for food and that it was a delight to the eyes, and the tree was desirable to make one wise, then she took from its fruit and she ate. Lexham English Bible

Genesis 2:16 And Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, “From every tree of the garden you may freely eat, 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die.” Lexham English Bible

How can I use AI to strengthen my dependence on God’s wisdom?

Exodus 20:3 “There shall be for you no other gods before me.” Lexham English Bible

Psalm 106:36 They worshiped their idols, which led to their downfall. 37 They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons. 38 They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters. By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan, they polluted the land with murder. New Living Translation

Mark 9:17 … “Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won’t let him talk. 18 And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn’t do it.” New Living Translation

Mark 9:25 When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit. “Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak,” he said. “I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!” New Living Translation

28% of the adults studied had romantic relationships with AI partners.

Genesis 2:18 Then Yahweh God said, “it is not good that the man is alone…” Lexham English Bible

Some things are worth replacing. Some are not.

Don’t use AI for reading the Bible: Bobby Gruenewald, the founder of YouVersion, noted that even when using highly indexed, mainstream versions of the Bible, AI models struggle with precision:

  • The Error Rate: Popular AI models misquote Scripture between 15% and 60% of the time.
  • The Accuracy Rate: This puts their text accuracy right in that 40% to 85% range.
  • Why this happens: Large language models are built to predict the most likely next word, not to strictly copy text verbatim unless heavily restricted. While a minor word shift or a misplaced comma might seem small, it completely changes the strict accuracy required for theological translation.

Evaluate what is delivered over what is promised

The future AI promised: AI doing meaningless tasks so I can write, create art, and spend time with my kids.

The future AI delivered: AI writing, creating art, and spending time with my kids so I can do meaningless tasks.

Don’t accept an addictive brain.

Psalm 1:1 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. 3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do. New Living Translation
